Ethan Yan Selected as the 2017 “Salute to Youth” Ambassador

On Tuesday, March 28, Ethan Yan was selected as the 2017 “Salute to Youth” Ambassador from among 61 young people of merit honored at the 41st annual awards banquet. He also received the James J. Guido Spirit of Youth Award and a $1,000 educational scholarship.

Ethan is from Mountain View, CA and attends Menlo School. He is an incredibly intelligent fourteen-year-old, who never ceases to amaze others with his work ethic, discipline and humility. He is an incredibly accomplished musician, and yet he looks forward to sharing his musicality not only on the “big” stage, but with the communities and congregations that he shares his time with. His impressive musical highlights include singing in New York City both at Symphony Space and at Carnegie Hall multiple times through the American Protégé International Competition and the New York Lyric National Vocal Competition, singing, playing the violin, and accompanying himself. He also won second place at the prestigious American Prize in Voice Performance while competing with predominantly vocally mature, older singers. Not only is he a consummate and dedicated performer, he also has studiously incorporated board exams and all of their theoretical requirements, for a more rounded musicianship.

Despite these accolades, Ethan is grounded, compassionate and quite generous. Since 2013 he has volunteered hundreds of hours of music to his local church (both violin and singing), and has given many volunteer hours for different organizations including the Community Services Agency Food Bank in Mountain View, the “future problem-solving program” at his middle school, over 350 hours to the Junior Mensa Society, and most recently an internship with the Institute of the Advancement of Education. He has also served on his school student council, holding positions as treasurer (2014), co-president (2015) and now freshman senator (2016).

Through music, Ethan inspires more singers, musicians and students to follow a similar path of musical scholarship in the service of others
