Santa Clara County Salute to Youth


The Santa Clara County “Salute to Youth” Program is a prestigious youth awards program. The program honors young people of merit who have made a significant or outstanding contribution in a wide range of unique categories including sports, community service, religion, vocational arts, visual arts, science, volunteerism, agriculture, heroism, leadership, performing arts, humanitarianism and other meaningful categories. More than $2,500 IN EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS will be awarded at the 42nd Annual Santa Clara County “Salute to Youth” Awards Program.

Every nominee will receive a certificate of commendation at a special recognition event.

2018 Salute to Youth Scholarships

Applicants/nominees in all Areas of Recognition are eligible and will be considered for the following scholarships:

James J. Guido Spirit of Youth Award – 2  $500 scholarships
Accomplishment and achievement in making a significant difference and being a shining  light within the community. Through their hard work, they have achieved excellence as a future leader.

Lonnie Toensfeldt Community Service Award – $500 scholarship
Accomplishment and achievement of a significant nature in the area of community service and/or volunteerism that contributes to the welfare of our society and the betterment of our community life. The nominee should have demonstrated contribution as a role model reflecting their dedication to the community and/or service to others, and encouraging others to volunteer in service to their school or community.

Suzette Galloway Most Inspirational Award – $250 scholarship
Achievement of a significant nature, by a youth who has overcome physical restrictions, and has accomplished meritoriously in spite of restrictions and limitations. Nominee should have demonstrated contribution as a role model in motivating and inspiring others.

Tom Galloway Award for Science, Technology & Robotics – $200 scholarship
Accomplishment/achievement of a significant nature in an area of science or technology, including robotics, reflecting dedication and commitment to his or her studies demonstrating significant accomplishment and achievement.

Robert Hosfeldt Award for Youth in Leadership – $200 scholarship
Accomplishment/achievement of a significant nature in the area of leadership including but not limited to student body offices, class or club offices, chairperson positions, club affiliations, committee participation and any or all other leadership activities which add to the betterment of school or community life. The nominee should have demonstrated contribution as a role model, dedication and service in leadership inspiring others to active participation.

Lorraine Palmer Award for Youth Peer Role Model – $200 scholarship
Accomplishment and achievement of a significant nature in the area of gaining the confidence and respect of peers as a youth/peer role model, inspiring others to strive for greater achievement, accomplishment and a standard of excellence.

Tom Tomasello Award for Performing Arts – $200 scholarship
Accomplishment and achievement in an area of the performing arts including the dramatic arts, dance and music. The nominee should have demonstrated contribution as a role model in dedication and service relating to this area.

Program Details

 

Qualifications
  • The applicant/nominee must:
    • Be between the ages of 14 and 19
    • Reside or attend school in Santa Clara County
    • Have achieved and accomplished something of significance that sets that individual apart from others
    • This may be a single act of accomplishment or may have a long history of achievement, accomplishment and/or community service involvement
  • If the applicant/nominee has a proven record of accomplishment please use only the last three (3) years of historical information for submission.
  • The applicant/nominee also authorizes and permits Youth Focus Inc. to utilize, at their discretion, any telecasts, radio broadcasts, motion pictures, video, photographs of contestant and information submitted on all official forms for advertising, publicity, and promotional purposes without compensation of any kind.

 

How to Apply/Nominate

1.  Complete the Application/Nomination form.

2. Upload a letter of recommendation.

      a.  Nominations without a letter of recommendation will not be accepted.

      b.  You may also submit up to three (3) pages of supporting materials in addition to the letter of recommendation for total of four (4) pages.

      c.  Any additional pages will be removed from the application prior to the screening of the nominations.

Although the student may have a long history of community involvement, the information presented should show a proven record of accomplishment(s) in the past three years. Please be as complete and detailed in your submissions as possible. This is the only information that will be used to judge our nominees.

 

Awards Selection
The “Salute to Youth” Board of Governors consists of well-known and respected men and women of the community who have a knowledge and expertise in the various categories for nomination. The Board of Governors reserves the right to reassign nominees to another category of recognition if it is determined by them that another category is more applicable to the submission. In the event there are two or more comparable entries, the Board of Governors may select more than one nominee. The Board of Governors decision will be final in all cases.

 

Areas of Recognition

 

  • Academic Achievement
    Accomplishment/achievement of a significant nature in the area of academic achievement reflecting dedication and commitment to scholastic excellence. Nominee should have demonstrated contribution as a role model in inspiring others to strive for scholastic achievement.
  • Agriculture
    Recognition for significant achievement and accomplishment in the field of agriculture. The nominee should have demonstrated contribution as a role model, dedication and service in this area inspiring others to greater levels of commitment and involvement.
  • Applied Arts
    Recognition for significant achievement and accomplishment in any area of the applied arts listed below. The nominee should have demonstrated contribution as a role model, leader, innovator with noted dedication, accomplishment and or service relating to an area of applied arts including:
  • Communications
  • Creative writing
  • Literature
  • Speech and debate
  • Business and Entrepreneurship
    Accomplishment and achievement of a significant nature in the area of youth entrepreneurship and or finance. The nominee should have demonstrated contribution as a role model inspiring others to greater achievement. The nominee in this category must have had his/her own business or made a significant contribution in leadership to a local business or enterprise.
  • Community Service
    Accomplishment and achievement of a significant nature in the area of community service and/or volunteerism that contributes to the welfare of our society and the betterment of our community life. The nominee should have demonstrated contribution as a role model reflecting their dedication to the community and/or service to others, and encouraging others to volunteer in service to their school or community.
  • Community Awareness
    Contribution of a significant nature to the betterment of our community or school environment in demonstrating a willingness to spearhead awareness for timely social issues confronting today’s society. Nominee should have demonstrated contribution as a role model in motivating and inspiring others.
  • Cultural Understanding
    Accomplishment and achievement of a significant nature in the area of cultural understanding providing leadership and inspiring others to provide opportunities for multicultural exchange, fostering a spirit of brotherhood resulting in a greater understanding of one, or a group of ethnic cultures within the community or school environment.
  • Environmental Contribution
    Recognition for significant achievement and accomplishment in the field of environmental concerns/issues for the betterment of the community. Nominee should have demonstrated contribution as a role model, dedication and service in this area.
  • Family Life Contribution
    Accomplishment and achievement of a significant nature in fulfilling family responsibilities as a youth due to extenuating circumstances which necessitated assuming all or portions of major domestic responsibilities or financial assistance in sustaining a home environment for the benefit of the family. Nominee should have demonstrated leadership and contribution in assisting the family as a role model for others.
  • Government Involvement
    Accomplishment of a significant nature in serving or participating in government, e.g. political issues, or serving elected officials in political campaigns or community issues as part of our legislative process. The nominee should have demonstrated contribution as a role model as youth in government inspiring others to take an active role in our democratic process.
  • Heroism
    Recognition for a significant act(s) of heroism for the benefit of others, taking a great risk of health and life to assist others in a heroic deed(s).
  • Humanitarian Contribution
    Contribution of a significant nature by a youth who has given in a meritorious manner to the betterment of our society to an individual, family, or organization demonstrating a willingness to serve his/her fellow man and foster a spirit of brotherhood and service to mankind. Nominee should have demonstrated contribution as a role model in motivating and inspiring others.
  • Most Inspirational
    Achievement of a significant nature, by a youth who has overcome physical restrictions, and has accomplished meritoriously in spite of restrictions and limitations. Nominee should have demonstrated contribution as a role model in motivating and inspiring others.
  • Journalism
    Recognition for significant achievement and accomplishment in the area of journalism. The nominee should have demonstrated contribution as a role model, dedication and service in this area inspiring others to greater levels of commitment and involvement.
  • Leadership
    Accomplishment/achievement of a significant nature in the area of leadership including but not limited to student body offices, class or club offices, chairperson positions, club affiliations, committee participation and any or all other leadership activities which add to the betterment of school or community life. The nominee should have demonstrated contribution as a role model, dedication and service in leadership inspiring others to active participation.
  • Mathematics
    Recognition for significant achievement and accomplishment in the field of mathematics. The nominee should have demonstrated contribution as a role model, dedication and service in this area inspiring others to greater levels of commitment and involvement.
  • Organizational Involvement
    Accomplishment and achievement of a significant nature in the advancement of an organization for the benefit of youth/community life. The nominee should have demonstrated leadership qualities and or a team effort and been a support force to the leadership of an organization. The nominee should have demonstrated contribution as a role model in dedication and service inspiring others to aspire to greater levels of leadership or organizational involvement.
  • Performing Arts

Recognition for significant achievement/accomplishment in the performing arts to include; the dramatic arts, music, dance, and theater. The nominee should have demonstrated contribution as a role model in dedication and service relating to this area.

  • Performing Arts
    • Behind the Scenes

Recognition for significant achievement/accomplishment in the “behind the scenes” aspects of the performing arts which may include technical design, scenic design, costume design, stage managing and other areas of support that often take place before, after or “behind the scenes” of a performing arts production. The nominee should have demonstrated contribution as a role model in dedication and accomplishment relating to this area.

  • Photography
    Accomplishment/achievement of a significant nature in photography, reflecting dedication and commitment to his or her study of photography and demonstrating significant accomplishment and achievement.
  • Religious Contribution
    Accomplishment and achievement of a significant nature in the area of religion and or religious leadership or service to the welfare and benefit of others. The nominee should have demonstrated leadership, charity, dedication and service as a role model inspiring others to a greater commitment to their faith.
  • Science, Technology & Robotics
    Accomplishment/achievement of a significant nature in an area of science or technology, including robotics, reflecting dedication and commitment to his or her studies demonstrating significant accomplishment and achievement.
  • Sports/Athletics
    Accomplishment and achievement of a significant nature in the area of athletics. Nominee should have demonstrated leadership and contribution as a role model, inspiring others to strive for a greater commitment to excellence.
  • Student Body President
    Accomplishment/achievement of a significant nature in the position of student body (ASB) president including outstanding dedication, commitment, leadership and/or serving as a role model to inspire others to become involved.
  • Visual Arts
    Accomplishment/achievement of a significant nature in the visual arts, reflecting dedication and commitment to his or her study of art and demonstrating significant accomplishment and achievement.
  • Vocational Education
    Accomplishment and achievement of a significant nature in the area of vocational training/industrial arts reflecting dedication and commitment to the development of life-long skills for life enhancement. The nominee should have demonstrated contribution as a role model inspiring others to strive for greater accomplishment and achievement.
  • Volunteerism
    Accomplishment/achievement of a significant nature in the area of volunteerism, reflecting dedication and commitment to volunteering, demonstrating significant accomplishment and achievement, and encouraging others to volunteer in service to their school or community.
  • Yearbook/Student Newspaper Editor
    Accomplishment/achievement of a significant nature by a student who has served as an editor for their school yearbook or newspaper reflecting dedication, commitment, leadership and/or a significant accomplishment in their contributions to the production of the yearbook or newspaper publication.   • Youth/Peer Role Model
    Accomplishment and achievement of a significant nature in the area of gaining the confidence and respect of peers as a youth/peer role model, inspiring others to strive for greater achievement, accomplishment and a standard of excellence.
